A thousand points of light, gathered into a single object.

In the royal havelis and forts of Rajasthan, entire halls were lined with tiny hand-cut mirrors, so that a single lamp could fill a room with shimmer. Sheesh Mahal brings that tradition down to a scale you can hold, place and live with every day.

The Peacock Palace

A palace is remembered not for its walls, but for the beauty that dances within them.

In the palaces and havelis of Rajasthan, arched niches framed painted peacocks on walls, ceilings and miniature paintings. The peacock is India's national bird, a symbol of beauty, grace and the joy of the monsoon, and in tradition it is linked with Lord Krishna's peacock feather.

In a haveli, even the walls were allowed to bloom.

In Jaipur, the Pink City, walls glow in soft rose and peach at sunrise and sunset, and the havelis behind them are known for pointed arches, carved pillars and delicate flowers. In Indian tradition, flowers are a quiet symbol of purity, grace and good fortune.

The Saffron Palace

Every palace window was built to look out and, in doing so, to be looked at.

The jharokha, the carved, canopied window, gives Rajasthan's palaces their unmistakable face, and Jaipur's Hawa Mahal is among its best-known examples. Its colour is just as telling: kesariya, the saffron-orange associated with sunrise, courage and the proud heritage of Rajput Rajasthan.
